Even if there are some friends (actual or internet blog-buddy type), the majority of our readers are not our friends.Dennis Laffeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03053699552003336733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714025510421557056.post-4239396421767258492011-07-14T09:58:56.815-05:002011-07-14T09:58:56.815-05:00Yes, and if you've actually made friends (work...Yes, and if you've actually made friends (working on a project, gaming online, became more acquainted in emails or facebook) then those people don't fall into that category of "you are not among friends." I speak more of just the people out there who comment here and there or read our blogs. That is not to say that most of these people aren't great folks. I believe the large majority of these people ARE wonderful folks, but there are also folks out there who are not so wonderful. Folks that may post nasty things or make light of what we do. Just as we provide our opinions for those who are civil, the uncivil get to read, and respond as well. I don't want this post to be taken as a dismissal of the community and its good nature. That is not the intent. Rather the intent is to try and put everything in perspective, because what we write is representative of who we are to 90% of the folks who read our blogs, and our actions and words are what we present to them to be judged upon. I think that is a point often lost on people, not just in the OSR, but everywhere.RobChandlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07751057765555584823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2714025510421557056.post-75003820842047484352011-07-14T09:34:53.916-05:002011-07-14T09:34:53.916-05:00A very sensible post and pretty much spot on. I get a little worked up with the "you are not among friends" quote, not because it's not generally true (it is), but because I have made friendships in this community and I still think that even acquaintances in this community are still generally/mostly great people. But you are 100% correct that our readership reaches beyond what we would call "community" to a larger group of people with vaguely shared interests. It's this group that is "not our friends". Not that they are not valuable or even potentially cool people, but we can not expect civilized behavior from them.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17635116929490398699noreply@blogger.com
